When Jay, a beautiful, joyful, playful 2 year old black Lab came to SFAS during Fall 2008, we found out that he had a massive load of heartworms. Due to the severity of his heartworm infestation, we had to put him through the taxing and often dangerous Immiticide treatment to kill the adult worms. Jay’s condition was so serious that he remained boarded at the clinic under constant Veterinary supervision for over 6 weeks. Even after the heartworm treatment was successfully completed, the heartworms left Jay with a severely damaged heart putting him into chronic Congestive Heart Failure.

He was able to come back to the Sanctuary, much to our own happiness, but his activities had to be closely monitored at first and he required a multitude of daily medications and regular treatments. But we were committed to providing Jay with a joyful, happy life for as long as possible. For over two years, he lived with us at the Sanctuary where we could ensure that his condition was being managed well and that he was still getting all the treatments he needed to stay healthy and strong. He was the single most “joyful” dog we’ve ever had the pleasure of caring for. He insisted on getting more than his fair share of playtime each day from his caregivers and would even manage to entertain himself for hours with his toys, anything from a ball, Frisbee or his Kong toys.

Sadly, Congestive Heart Failure is an incurable condition and we knew that our time with Jay was limited. One Sunday morning this past February, Jay’s condition worsened rapidly. He was suddenly uninterested in his food and his toys, and he had an onset of labored breathing. He just didn’t seem have any enthusiasm or joy left. We realized at that moment, he was ready to cross over to Rainbow Bridge – so all the caregivers said their good-byes and we took him in to end his suffering. We all know he’ll be at Rainbow Bridge, with a Kong Frisbee in his mouth, waiting to play with us again someday.

Jay was, and remains, a perfect example of our mission. To provide the best care possible, with love, respect and compassion for every orphaned animal possible. Please share Jay’s story with everyone you know so that his short life, could have been a much longer, even more fulfilling had he never contracted heartworms.

Prevention and early treatment of existing infestations can help to avoid a scenario like Jay’s.

Formerly known as Wabi Sabi Interior Consignment, S&S was taken over by two board members in February, 2011 and rededicated to supporting SFASs. Other than operating overhead expenses, such as rent and electricity, all the proceeds will be donated directly to St. Francis Animal Sanctuary.

Consignment shopping is one of the hottest new retail trends, and S&S Consignment will maintain an impressive inventory of high quality pre-owned contemporary furniture, fine antiques, artwork, and period pieces.

Please help spread the word that we are always looking for additional consignment items but that the store is open and is stocked with many beautiful items ready for purchase.

Since arriving at the Sanctuary, this gentle giant has won over the hearts of everyone he meets. He is well mannered with other dogs, and already knew the commands for sit and stay and walks beautifully on a leash. We can’t begin to imagine how he ended up as a wandering stray, but we’ll make sure that his future is much more secure! He has been neutered, microchipped, and is current on all his vaccinations. We’re looking for a family that will be able to provide him with all the love and affection he deserves.

After the fire that destroyed our original store in April 2010, the St. Francis Thrift and Gift Shop had a huge influx of high quality merchandise. This supply has dwindled down and we now need more donations to resell. The proceeds from the Thrift Shop helps support the Sanctuary so please, pass along that we’re looking for quality items to all your friends and family.

We’re looking for kitchen items like china, dishware, crystal, glassware, cutlery, and pots and pans. Artwork is especially popular as are books, CD’s and DVD’s. Children’s items, jewlery and accessories are fast sellers and vintage or antique pieces are extremely popular. Also, small electronics and furniture such as end-tables, lamps, and coffee tables and linens like bed- spreads, placemats, napkins and other fabrics in good condition chairs are accepted.The only things we DO NOT take are clothing and computers.

Hi! I’m Izzy (left) and I’m a very unusual dark calico girl about 7 years old who needs a lot of love and affection. I came to SFAS in January because my parents got a divorce and my mom had to get an apartment that only allowed one pet. She decided to keep the chocolate lab and give me and best friend, Freeloader, away. Freeloader was so lucky – he already got adopted! I’m hoping someone will come and meet me so I can find a FOREVER home of my own too.

Hi! I’m Chessy (left) – I’m another dark Calico (Tortie). I’m a real lazy bones, and I love to nap and just lounge around all day. I’m a little over a year old – in fact, Chester (a kitten from the one and ONLY litter I had) is just six months younger than me! Thankfully, SFAS took us all in, got us all vacinated and spayed and neutered. If you’re looking for a couch potato then I’m your girl! Come by the thrift store to meet me or any of my pals – even if you’re not ready to adopt, we love all the snuggles and attention too!
